Preparing Your Heating System for Winter: A Checklist
Published April 15, 2026 ยท 4 min read
While Austin winters are generally mild compared to the Northeast, we still get our share of freezing nights โ and when the temperature drops, you want your heating system ready to go. Use this checklist to prepare your furnace or heat pump before the first cold snap.
โ DIY Checklist
- Replace the air filter โ Start the heating season with a fresh filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and can cause your furnace to overheat and shut down.
- Test the thermostat โ Switch to heat mode and set the temperature 5ยฐF above room temperature. The system should kick on within a minute. If it doesn't, check batteries and wiring.
- Clear vents and registers โ Make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains aren't blocking any supply or return vents. Blocked airflow = higher bills and uneven heating.
- Check the condensate drain โ High-efficiency furnaces produce condensation. A clogged drain line can cause water damage or trigger a safety shutoff. Pour a cup of vinegar down the line to clear minor clogs.
- Inspect the exhaust flue โ For gas furnaces, check that the outdoor exhaust vent is clear of debris, bird nests, and snow. A blocked flue can cause carbon monoxide to back up into your home.
- Test carbon monoxide detectors โ If you have a gas furnace, working CO detectors are non-negotiable. Replace batteries and test each unit monthly during heating season.
๐ง When to Call a Pro
- Furnace makes loud banging or screeching noises on startup
- Burner flame is yellow or flickering (should be steady blue)
- System short-cycles (turns on and off repeatedly)
- You smell gas โ evacuate immediately and call 911
